Historians trace the use of henna (the plant mehndi is made from) to ancient Egypt, where it was used to dye the hair and nails of pharaohs before mummification. From there, the tradition spread across the Middle East, North Africa, and eventually South Asia through trade routes. In India, mehndi became deeply woven into culture during the Mughal era (16th–19th centuries), when intricate floral and paisley patterns — inspired by Persian art — became popular among royalty.
